Interview with Winning Screenwriter Byron Erwin (POOP MOVIE)

Get to know the writer:

 1. What is your screenplay about?

See the world from the Poop’s point of view as a cowardly outcast discovers his courage and bravery when he battles the evil Toilet Paper Empire in this animated action adventure.

2. What genres does your screenplay fall under?

Comedy / animated adventure

3. Why should this screenplay be made into a movie?

The laughter that it will bring to everyone that sees it!

4. How would you describe this script in two words?

Holy Shit!

5. What movie have you seen the most times in your life?

The Shining.

6. How long have you been working on this screenplay?

4 months

7. How many stories have you written?

Two dozen feature screenplays

8. What is your favorite song? (Or, what song have you listened to the most times in your life?)

96 Tears by Question Mark And The Mysterians

9. What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?

Creating a spirit for the lead character that made him relatable to everyone. The first draft had him as cynical and pessimistic. That was the wrong way to go. It’s much funnier to watch a character with set goals and dreams and then witness them unravel at the seams.

10. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

I am a film director who released his first feature film in theaters nationwide in 2009. Unfortunately, the film wasn’t very funny, so it did not do well. I went back to the drawing board and worked on my comedic elements – and this is the result.

11. You entered your screenplay via FilmFreeway. What has been your experiences working with the submission platform site?

Film Freeway has been incredibly easy to use for me. Whether it is one of my film, or a screenplay, I simply upload the files, write a mini synopsis, and then I am set to start submitting. I found their search engine to be very user friendly and most festivals that I want to enter are available through their submission process.

12. What influenced you to enter the festival? What were your feelings on the initial feedback you received?

I found your festival after a brief search on Film Freeway. I looked up the reviews and submitted immediately. The feedback I received was incredibly inspirational. I think they nailed the weak spots. I was aware of them, but did not have the objective viewpoint to make the corrections. Sometimes, one gets so invested in the story that it is hard to see it from the outside. The feedback assisted me in finding the right tempo for the pacing in the problem spots and turned the script into something that I am very proud of. Most scripts that I have written are preconceived ideas that I flush out on the paper. This story was an inspiration that hit like a lightning bolt. It practically wrote itself. The first draft was completed in one week. What made it so easy? I only had one goal. Make everyone laugh!
