Interview with Screenwriter Mike Bencivenga (HAUNTED HEART)

1. What is your screenplay about?

It’s a comedy about love, loss and what comes after. I’d say it’s a comedy about grief but I don’t want to give the impression I’m mocking or making light of the grieving process. But it definitely deals with what a mess it can make of us.

2. What genres does your screenplay fall under?

That very familiar Supernatural, Ghost Romantic Comedy-Drama genre. I can never get enough of those.

3. Why should this screenplay be made into a movie?

Because I need to get out of the house. That and because I think a comedy with healing and heart is something we can all use after what we’ve al been through. In addition it touches on LGBTQ+ themes in way that’s very accepting. And we can’t get enough of THAT for sure.

4. How would you describe this script in two words?

With the title, Haunted Heart. It says what the dilemma of the main character is. And describes the action as well. If I get two more I’d humbly add: Infinitely pleasurable

5. What movie have you seen the most times in your life?

MODERN TIMES by Charlie Chaplin. A close second would be THE APARTMENT by Billy Wilder.

6. What made you want to write screenplays?

When I was at NYU I discovered I loved writing scripts. In fact, myself and a friend from my class both hired ourselves out as script doctors for other students’ scripts. His name was Chris Columbus. I wonder what ever happened to him. Anyway I loved telling stories in that format. I also write plays but those are much tougher, in my opinion. Movies are fun to write because you envision everything and then have to figure out how to put it down on paper. And there’s nothing like the thrill of coming up with a visual that captures the theme of your story.

7. What has been your experiences working with the FilmFreeway submission platform site?

It’s been good. The site has lead me to many competitions not on other websites. Such as this one.
