Interview with Screenwriter Clara BIJL (For Better Or For Worse)

Matthew Toffolo: What is your screenplay about?

Clara BIJL: An American-born woman who’s deemed to be an “illegal” attempts to avoid deportation at any cost, only to find that her seemingly fool-proof plan has backfired.

2. You say that it’s based on “True Event”. Can you expand on that?

13 millions individuals do not have already access to citizenship documents.

Then there are people who are born to parents who want to be off-the-grid.

3. Why should this screenplay be made into a movie?

It’s an interesting unique story. It’s something most people don’t believe happens. It’s relevant with today’s America.

4. How would you describe this script in two words?

Corky and humorous.

5. What movie have you seen the most times in your life?

Groundhog day.

6. How long have you been working on this screenplay?

About 10 years.

7. How many stories have you written?

I’ve probably written 15 versions of that story.

8. What is your favorite song? (Or, what song have you listened to the most times in your life?)

So many…

9. What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?

Making every angle of the story fit with one another.

10. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

Stand-up comedy.

11. You entered your screenplay via FilmFreeway. What has been your experiences working with the submission platform site?

I love it. It’s easy to find festivals, keep track of submissions and follow up with festivals.

12. What influenced you to enter the festival? What were your feelings on the initial feedback you received?

I wanted to know from people I didn’t know if my screenplay was any good.

My initial feedback has been very helpful. It helped me identify parts of the script that needed to be worked on and it helped me see what worked and what didn’t work in the story.
