Interview with Screenwriter Federico Carro (THE KING OF LIGHT)

Matthew Toffolo: What is your screenplay about?

Federico Carro: My script narrates the exploits of a simple crusader named Fedrick, who escaped the war that had to happen between the crusaders and the Fatimids, and finding a mysterious stone in the holy sepulcher breaks it and cataputes it into a parallel world to his own! It no longer has the battle decides to return from its love Isabel to Turin, but this city has become the capital of the forbidden empire of evil for which it is managed by an order of dark gods that dominate the world! Through his exploits to try to find his love again, he ventures into a totally new world full of obstacles, particular people, curses, subterfuge and bizarre beings that ally and clash in his path!

2. What genres does your screenplay fall under?

My script derived from my second novel as well as the first novel of my Fantasy trilogy called “The king of light”

3. Why should this screenplay be made into a movie?

because it is a breathtaking adventure full of actions, dynamism, suspense, complicated scenes, but also highly sought after with ever-increasing improvisations like the adventure that confronts the crusader … the first chapter is limited to the Fantasy but by opening up the question will become more great to leak into a universe totally created by me in a new version never imagined before!

4. How would you describe this script in two words?

particular as breathtaking and unpredictable fantasy script full of actions, complicity in a new world to be discovered

5. What movie have you seen the most times in your life?

Maybe titanic … it is a true story but it makes one think through various vicissitudes and particular events … not by chance has won so many awards and will remain in the overall mind of the people for the masterpiece performed

6. How long have you been working on this screenplay?

I first started the book for which I worked uninterruptedly for 14 months to build the whole trilogy and to match the whole story, for the script instead I worked for 9 consecutive months

7. How many stories have you written?

for now I wrote a screenplay from my second novel, I have written 4 books for now and I’m writing the fifth one lately! I wrote three novels in both Italian and English, a collection of poems and also published three music albums! The last musical album are represented by soundtracks for my trilogy: “The king of light” for which they were used to create book trailers and for other projects related to my fantasy trilogy!

8. What is your favorite song? (Or, what song have you listened to the most times in your life?)

my thoughts have always been centered on nature, not by chance my first novel and the writing of my poems and many other things are also linked in my novels and in my works! So the song: “Earth song” by Michael Jackson I think it is the song most listened to me and that always excites me to listen to it!

9. What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?

The biggest obstacle was to see which parts are the most fundamental to put and others to discard! Since the book where the script is from has many more adventures, more situations and explained many more things that, for obvious cinematographic reasons, have not been issued, putting them in the possible spin-offs that I want to finish one day both in books and in the script !

10. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

I am a versatile artist, so besides being a writer I also composed, sang and arranged three music albums, I am a 3D generalist with the program: “Maya” I am an advertising graphic designer, I like to draw and paint and process other information with photoshop, illustrator and a hip hop dancer … long ago I imitated Michael Jackson in various shows!

11. You entered your screenplay via FilmFreeway. What has been your experiences working with the submission platform site?

I must say that the site is one of my favorites that is there is managed beautifully and gives you the official results in real time! It would be great to create such a site with work contests, or prize competitions in general … Filmfreeway is really fantastic

12. What influenced you to enter the festival? What were your feelings on the initial feedback you received?

My first ever film festival that I ever took part in was this January to which I came first as the best script, after which I won several awards in a few months, selections as a finalist, semi-finalist and other nominations! What influenced me was my determination to show and judge my work to competent people, to which I simply tried to propose my script, winning so many prizes!
