Interview with Filmmaker Roy Boucher (37)

37, 5min., USA, Romance
Directed by Roy Boucher
A love story.

Get to know the filmmaker:

What motivated you to make this film? People around me were having health issues and I found myself in that frame of mind. At almost the same time I saw the 1928 French silent film “Passion of Joan of Arc.” I was inspired by the extreme close ups. Choosing back and white better supported the feel of the short.

From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film? Writing to final product took a little over 6 months.

How would you describe your film in two words. Dark love.

What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film? There really were no obstacles. The Director of Photography (also the editor) and I spent a fair amount of time fine tuning the transitions in editing.

What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video? I immediately felt how special it was to have total strangers comment on the work. And, extremely pleased that the comments covered the writing, acting, editing, and music.

When did you realize that you wanted to make films? I have been part of a writing group since moving to southern California about 13 years ago. I found that I liked writing 10 minute plays. That then turned into doing films that fit the micro category (under 5 minutes.)

What film have you seen the most in your life? Hmmm. The one that comes to mind is the first “Mama Mia.” The music and cinematography were great. And, I was amazed that the Abba songs could be tied into a story line.

What other elements of the festival experience can we and other film festivals implement to satisfy you and help you further your filmmaking career? Feedback feedback feedback. It was really great to get a feedback video. Thank you thank you. All feedback, good and bad help me to grow and do better work.

You submitted to the festival via FilmFreeway. How has you experiences been working on the festival platform site? I am a fan of FilmFreeway. The site is very well constructed. There does seem to be ab issue in identifying the specific category when recognition is earned and you have submitted for consideration in several categories.

What is your favorite meal? From childhood to senior citizen, I love meatloaf with mashed potatoes, creamed corn, and applesauce. Please don’t tell anyone that I mix them all together on my plate.

What is next for you? A new film? Yes, a new film. My very first writing project was about a bartender and his hand puppet (Harry and Me). I want to revisit that concept and do another micro film.
