Interview with Artist Ram Dass, (TO BECOME BORN)

TO BECOME BORN played to rave reviews at the February 2022 WILDsound Film Festival.

1. What motivated you to make this film?

The story of the music behind this video is that I lost my newborn son to a rare genetic condition at three days old. The music was a way of processing his loss and coming to terms with my grief and the life that was in front of me. “To Become Born” was about the idea of what it means to go from spirit to a human life; seeing the immense amount of beauty that we get to experience in our lives coupled with unimaginable loss and pain. I partnered with Mariana Ros to have her direct her version of this idea and to see how others could visually interpret the music and the story behind it.

2. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film?

I think we had the video completed less than a month after our initial concept conversations.

3. How would you describe your film in two words!?

Vivid, potent

4. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film?

Mostly that we were not able to be in the same physical location as the team that shot and edited. They did the work in Mexico as well, so as much as we tried to communicate precisely, words cannot be translated perfectly.

5. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video?

This was my first music video, so it was incredibly moving to hear people speak to the beauty that we created, especially since it all was inspired by my son. It is so meaningful to have his memory carried on and a loss create inspiration and joy in others.

6. When did you realize that you wanted to make films?

I was trained as a classical clarinetist and originally had aspirations to be a session musician for scoring films. Once I became a music producer, I started paying attention to how music affects film and wanted to create music that was not just for listening to but would accompany different media. During the pandemic, I had the opportunity to score a film by Bob Degus (Pleasantville) called “AWAKEN”, which took me deeper into that art. With my EP, ‘And Now He Has Wings’ I not only got to help create this film, but I shot and directed a music video myself for the track “The Water Poem”. I had such a great time with that, I got the film bug and can’t wait to do more.

7. What film have you seen the most in your life?

The Princess Bride

8. What other elements of the festival experience can we and other festivals implement to satisfy you and help you further your filmmaking career?

I don’t have any suggestions at this time

9. You submitted to the festival via FilmFreeway. How has your experiences been working on the festival platform site?

Totally smooth.

10. What is your favorite meal?

I’m a bit of a foodie, so there are many favorites depending on my mood, but ultimately, nothing beats a meal that was made by someone who has been cooking for their family for years and is doing it with love and care.

11. What is next for you? A new film?

I’d love to score another film and also am looking forward to the next music videos for my next EP
